our work

Three Focus Areas

The Maine North Atlantic Institute focuses on three major areas to collaborate with our North Atlantic partners, contribute to Maine’s economy, and enable USM to graduate globally competent students. The focus areas are Environmental & Community Health, Economy & Law, and Cultural Connections.

Environmental & Community Health

MNAI supports collaborations with our partners in Maine and the North Atlantic to strengthen understanding of climate change and its broad global effects, its impacts on the community and human health, and its influence on our global, national, and state economy.

Economy & Law

MNAI supports collaborations with our partners in Maine and the North Atlantic that connect businesses with educational services, public policy, and oceans and coastal law. These connections seek to better understand climate change and how to mitigate and adapt to its impact on the environment and health.

Cultural Connections

MNAI supports collaborations that connect Maine to the North Atlantic through initiatives such as faculty and student exchanges in cultural tourism, the arts and humanities, and multidisciplinary programs.
